RIP Staring Rats [02 Feb 2011|08:13pm]

kitschyduck
I've been keeping rats for eleven years now, but due to the endless heart ache of having rat after rat put to sleep after such short life spans, it's taken it's toll and I've decided not to get anymore. I just feel such a bond with each little rodent I let into my heart and before I know it I'm having to watch them die. You may have seen my last two rats on Tonight with Jay Leno, Attack of The Show, Rude Tube, Untamed and Uncut and probably some other shows I've forgotten. They'll be on a Japanese show called 'Unbelievable' next month. The reason I'm posting here is because I've been in tears all night because my very last rat, Bainbridge has just been put to sleep this evening due to the symptoms of diabetes. He couldn't walk anymore and absolutely hated being alone. He wouldn't eat more than a few licks of baby food a day and became so clingy to me. It was heart breaking and I felt so embarrassed crying in public at the vet office afterwards. So, in his memory, as well as his brother's , I'd like to share the video that made them famous with people who understand my sadness of never being able to stroke his cute face again...

For details as to why they did this, check out the video description on You Tube

Hello [30 Nov 2010|03:14am]

[ mood | mellow ]

Hi everyone. I'm new. I'm a breeder from Marion, Ohio. I do have a mentor who is helping me and I've researched rat breeding for over a year now and continue to research even while breeding because there is always something new to learn. I have a vet for my rats that offers 24/7 emergency service as well so all my rats are covered in case of emergency or when they just need a check up.

I joined livejournal to keep a journal for my rattery and provide updates for those interested. I'd also like to meet some people that adore rats as much as I do.

Rest in Peace Alexander :-( [18 Oct 2010|01:22am]

peromyscus
[ mood | sad ]

Tonight I came home to find my pet rat Alexander had passed away in his cage :-( I used to call him "The Old One" since he was my oldest rat, nearing about four years of age. I had adopted him and his brother Gary (who passed away of cancer a year ago last June). I adopted them both from the Toronto Humane Society back in May 2009 to give them a home, when their previous owner had surrendered them saying that it was because they were bought for the kids and the kids weren't taking care of them anymore. Alexander quickly became the new boss rat and loved to stuff his face with food and treats. I nicknamed him Mr. Alexander after that. :-D He was a tough one and even when he was becoming older and not as mobile as before, he kept on wanting to live on, especially after I got him a new cage mate when I adopted the dumbo rat named George from Toronto Animal Services. I knew that Alexander was going to pass away sooner or later but it seems that he could never give up while I was around, always wanting to be held, taken out to play and given treats. He loved apple slices and yogurt treats. Alexander will be buried next to his brother Gary at the garden plot location under the tall spruce trees. R.I.P. Alexander :-(

Cage & Stuffs Available in NoVA [04 Feb 2010|06:18pm]

callingcry
Hey all!

My two baby ratties died this past spring and summer, and I've just been keeping their cage w/the hope that I might eventually get some more someday. However, I'm about to move, and I unfortunately can't keep the cage anymore, 'cause there's just no use for me carting it around when the next time I get another caged pet would be in the distant future. (Like 2 - 5 yrs, plus, since having little ones who pass away so quickly is just too painful for me to repeat anytime soon.) So, would anybody like a big, mulit-level Clean Living cage, w/all the trimmings inside? (You can choose to keep or toss what you like, of course.) It's got a hammock and a silent-spinner wheel, an unused rolly-ball (the kind they get in), and all the food/water stuffs needed, as well as a bunch of rattie toys.

The cage is stored in Sterling, & I'm asking $100 for all of it, but am open to reasonable offers. :)

Here's a link to where I got mine from; (though it's on back order from them ATM): http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751768

Plus, if you'd like to see the cage in action, (to see how your guys might like the cage, or to examine its relative size), you can see a wee video I made of my late ratties on YouTube, @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zDB-9JLTUs. (I had to stand on tiptoe to see into their hammock, which was on the top level, and I'm 5'2".)

It was a darned good cage. And I'd say the only improvement they could have -possibly- made to it would be that it'd be great to have clear side litter protectors on each level, too (like the one they already have on the bottom level), 'cause although the protector on the bottom keeps the bedding in, it'd be nice to make it harder for the little stinkers to fling their poo off the top levels. ;) (But that can be remedied w/putting the cage on a mat, or in between book shelves like I did so it's easier to just wipe away. :))

Thanks lots y'all, and many happy returns w/all your own little ratties. :)

Edit: My bad. Thanks for all your help and comments. You did a great job of staying on subject and making a single post that was relevant to the questions I was asking. Thanks very much for attempting to answer any of my questions. Your opinions have all been taken into consideration.

Don't know how active this community is, but it can't hurt to join. [11 Jan 2010|12:36am]

natane
Name: Erin (and I can't forget to mention my co-mommy, Jenni)
Age: 18 (and 18)
Location?: Western NC, US
How long have you liked rats?: I've always loved animals of any type. These are my first rats but I've had two rodents before - a gerbil and a hamster. The gerbil died from improper care from my family when I was away for a few days (I was 12) and the hamster, which was a family pet, died about 4 months ago from eating bedding.
How many rats do you have?: Two. Their names are Harry and Draco.

[Quick disclaimer: They were feeder rats. Yes, I know we did nothing to stop others from being bred as feeder rats, but these two are at least having a good life. Lecturers may go elsewhere, thank you.]

They're both male and we're not precisely sure how old they are - we got them from a pet store. We estimate that they're maybe 8-9 weeks currently, although that could be wrong. They are both currently about 14 inches long when stretching, including tail. We haven't weighed them simply because we have nothing to do so.

Harry is black with a white belly. He's very hyper and skittish, and even though we're 98% sure they were from the same litter, he's skinnier. He likes to wrestle (over anything, at all) and shove Draco out of the way to drink from the water bottle. Although he was the calmer one when we first bought them, he's having some issues with being held, still.

Draco is... fat. If he didn't have those humongous rat balls, I'd worry about him being a pregnant female! He's much better with being held, but he has a recent preoccupation with trying to get out of the tank when we take the top off. He's white - actually I believe the color is called champagne? - and has dark pink eyes. He's friendly and content and will actually lie there after being knocked away from the water bottle with Harry standing on top of him drinking.

So... that's my intro!

I really need help as soon as possible, there isn't time for an introduction. I have an approximately one-year-old hairless rat named Hewey who's currently on Baytril and I just noticed after looking at him right now that his face is really, really swollen. He was given his medication about 45 minutes ago and I'm wondering if this could be an allergic reaction even though he's been on the medication for about six months. I don't have any money to take him to the vet right now. Someone please help me.

It's a rat carrying a piece of bread into her cage. She's a pretty impressive climber.
